With bigtime offense and plenty solid pitching, Magoffin County’s 16-under all-star softball squad had little trouble advancing past its first two East Kentucky State Tournament foes.
Katie Shepherd scored a run in the first inning of the tournament opener against Mt. Washington and Magoffin County never trailed en route to a 19-3 victory Saturday.
The local squad, which got at least one run from all 12 players, exploded for 13 second inning runs and recorded a five-inning mercy victory.
Shepherd and Brandi Howard crossed the plate three times each while Chelsey Cole, the starting and winning pitcher, Cassandra Salyer, LeAnna Mullins, Julieann Helton, and Haley Barnett scored two runs apiece.
Paige Fletcher, Paige Howard, and Ashley Hackworth scored one run each.
Cole allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out five in her route going performance.
The offense kept coming in Saturday’s second game as Magoffin County scored in each of the first four innings before finally breaking the game wide open in the sixth.
Leading 5-3, Magoffin County sent 12 batters plateward, scored eight times, and coasted from there to a 14-3 win over Martin County.
Brandi Howard and Chelsey Cole scored three times each while LeAnna Mullins finished with two hits and four runs batted in.
Helton crossed the plate twice and Shepherd, Mullins, Fletcher, Paige Howard, and Haley Barnett scored once.
Cole again went the distance, this time allowing no earned runs on just three hits while striking out a total of eight.
Magoffin County lost its first game Sunday to Spencer County but responded in the losers’ bracket with a win over Whitley County before defeating Spencer County twice to win the tournament championship.
