SALYERSVILLE- On May 8 at approximately 11:00 PM, a traffic safety check point at an approved, designated location in Magoffin County on the Mountain Parkway resulted in the arrests of three men traveling in a gray 2009 Ford Taurus.

As KSP Trooper’s Thompson and Haney made contact with the vehicle, they noticed an extremely strong odor of marijuana.  Upon asking the driver, identified as Daniel K Belcher, of Dorton, KY, for his driver’s license, insurance card and registration receipt, the officers reported that he appeared to be very nervous.  Mr. Belcher was unable to locate the requested documents and was asked to pull to the side of the road to try and locate them. The officers then asked Mr. Belcher if there was anything in the vehicle that was illegal and at that time, he grabbed a plastic baggy and book of rolling papers out of the console and surrendered those items.  Mr. Belcher and two passengers were at that time, asked to exit the vehicle.  They did so voluntarily and Belcher gave the officers consent to search.
Upon searching the vehicle, the officers noticed the marijuana odor becoming stronger as they got near the trunk.  Mr. Belcher and his passengers were asked if there was marijuana in the trunk.  Belcher admitted that there was and pointed to the location under the trunk compartment.  Under the trunk compartment, the officers located a large plastic bag covered with numerous other bags.  Inside of the bags a clear zip lock bag was located which contained a green plant substance suspected to be marijuana.  Once all of the bags were open, a large amount of marijuana was discovered which Mr. Belcher claimed to be approximately 1 ½ pounds.
The three occupants of the vehicle, Daniel K Belcher, 32, of Dorton, KY, John Logan Barnes, 18, of Jenkins, KY, and Thomas J. Smallwood, 22, of Jenkins, KY, all stated that they had gone to Michigan and together paid $3,000.00 for the marijuana with intent to transport it back to Pike County
