BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Magoffin to host Knott Central in 2014-15 season-opener

SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County boys’ basketball team will host three-time defending 14th Region champion Knott County Central in its season-opener on Dec. 1. State title contender Knott County Central pulled away to defeat the Hornets 85-55 when the two teams met on Dec. 7, 2013. 

Magoffin County, under the tutelage of head coach Robbie Russell, compiled a 15-13 record during the 2013-14 season. Eventual 15th Region champion Johnson Central eliminated Magoffin County from the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament, defeating the Hornets 84-61 in the semifinals.

Russell is headed into his third season as the head coach of the Magoffin County boys’ basketball team. 

Earlier in the summer, Magoffin County faced Knott County Central, Pike County Central, Johnson Central, Lawrence County, Sheldon Clark, Phelps , Mingo Central (W.Va.), Hurricane (W.Va.), Haysi (Va.), Belfry, Prestonsburg, Wolfe County, Pikeville, Shelby Valley, Tug Valley (W.Va.), Science Hill (Tenn.) and East Ridge The Hornets played Knott County Central and Pike County Central twice earlier in the summer.

Magoffin County’s 2014-15 schedule will also feature games versus East Ridge, Pikeville, Powell County, Paintsville, Breathitt County, Johnson Central, Allen Central, South Floyd, Paintsville, Sheldon Clark, Belfry, Morgan County, Betsy Layne, Johnson Central, Shelby Valley, Prestonsburg and June Buchanan.
