SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County's 2018-19 schedule will include one of the area's top new boys' high school events. The Hornets are slated to face Letcher County Central in the Buffalo Wild Wings Shootout at Pike County Central High School on Saturday, Dec. 15.
The complete schedule for the 2018-19 edition of the Buffalo Wild Wings Shootout has not yet been finalized and released. In 2017, several title contenders from multiple regions competed in the Pike County Central-hosted prep basketball event. The 2017 edition of the Buffalo Wild Wings Shootout also included Chapmanville, a powerhouse from bordering West Virginia.
A program out of the neighboring 14th Region, Letcher County Central concluded the 2017-18 season 7-21. Letcher County Central lost to Cordia in the opening round of the 53rd District Boys' Basketball Tournament in February.
The Cougars are under the direction of head coach Winston Lee, a former Whitesburg standout player.
Magoffin County ended the 2017-18 season 9-20. The Hornets lost to Paintsville in the first round of the 57th District Boys' Basketball Tournament. Prior to suffering the season-ending loss to longtime rival Paintsville, Magoffin County managed to win three of four games. The Hornets are under the direction of second-year head coach Scott Castle. Following a successful stint as head coach of the Magoffin County girls' basketball program, Castle made the move to the Hornets' bench in 2017.
The Magoffin County and Letcher County Central boys' basketball teams did not meet during the 2017-18 season.
