BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Hornets hold off much-improved Belfry, 46-40

SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Hornets returned to the win column at home on Thursday (Jan. 19). defeating the visiting Belfry Pirates 46-40 in a 15th Region boys' basketball matchup.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 13-7.

Belfry dropped to 8-8 with the loss. 

Ryan Mullins led Magoffin County with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Mullins led all players in both scoring and rebounding. 

Turning in a double-double of his own, Trenton Russell delivered 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets in the hard-fought win. 

Jaren Lovely narrowly missed reaching double figures, posting nine points for the Hornets. Lovely dished out six assists for Magoffin County in the victory. 

Dalton Peters added seven points and 10 rebounds as Magoffin County claimed the win.

Belfry shot only 24.1 percent (14-of-58) from the field. The Pirates were 6-of-22 (27.3 percent) from 3-point range. 

Belfry shot 100 percent (6-of-6) from the free throw line. 

A pair of Pirates reached double figures in the scoring column. Koleston Blankenship paced Belfry with a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds. Accompanying Blankenship in double figures in the Belfry scoring column, Isaiah Roblee contributed 11 points. 

Aiding the Belfry offensive attack, Justin Barker and Cameron Catron chipped in seven points apiece. 

Magoffin County entered the week with regular-season games remaining versus Paintsville, Betsy Layne, Morgan County, Johnson Central, East Ridge, Knott County Central, South Floyd, Prestonsburg and Pikeville.
