BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Russell named to all-tournament team

PIKEVILLE - Senior Trenton Russell represented Magoffin County on the 2016-2017 All-15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament Team. Russell was recognized at the conclusion of the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Monday night. 

One of the state's top players and a Mr. Basketball candidate, Russell poured in a game-high 40 points in the Hornets' loss to South Floyd in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament. South Floyd edged Magoffin County 74-70 in overtime to eliminate the Hornets from the postseason. 

Pikeville, under the direction of first-year head coach Elisha Justice, won the 15th Region title, defeating longtime powerhouse Johnson Central 95-84 in the championship game. Johnson Central has made six straight trips to the 15th Region championship game. 

Joining Russell on the all-tournament team were Ethan Smith-Mills (Allen Central), Austin Woolum (Belfry), Cody Potter (Shelby Valley), Jared Wellman (Lawrence County), Timmy Dalton (Lawrence County), JR Tackett (South Floyd), Brady Conn (South Floyd), Cole Crace (Johnson Central), Mason Blair (Johnson Central), Jacob Rice (Johnson Central), Conner Roberts (Pikeville), Kyle Watkins (Pikeville), Conner Risner (Pikeville) and Evan Rhodes (Pikeville). 

Pikeville standout Wyatt Battaile was named the 15th Region Tournament Most Valuable Player. Battaile and the Panthers will compete in the Boys' Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington next week.
