SALYERSVILLE - Justin Combs is headed into his second season as head coach of the Magoffin County football team. The Hornets opened preseason practice earlier in the month.

Combs, a Breathitt County native, replaced Scotty McCoy as the Hornets' head coach in August of last year.

In a previous coaching stint, Combs served as an assistant coach with the Hornets in 2014. In 2015, his first season as a head coach in Manchester, Combs guided Clay County to a 2-9 record and a berth in the Class 4A State Playoffs.

Combs played at Breathitt County under head coach Mike Holcomb from 2001-2004. He was a member of Breathitt County's 2002 Class 2A state championship team.

Less than two seasons removed from guiding Magoffin County to its first district championship and appearance in the playoffs, McCoy left the Hornet football program.

McCoy coached the Hornets to a district title in 2014. The Hornets compiled a 7-5 record in 2014, defeating Sheldon Clark in the opening round of the Class 3A State Playoffs before suffering a season-ending loss to Lawrence County.

Magoffin County concluded the 2016 season, Combs' debut campaign as head coach in Salyersville, 2-8. The Hornets posted back-to-back wins over Betsy Layne and Morgan County. Magoffin County suffered losses to Leslie County, Estill County, Shelby Valley, Pike County Central, Knott County Central, Breathitt County, Powell County and West Carter.

Magoffin County finalized and released its 2017 schedule in the spring. The Hornets are slated to host East Carter in a season-opener on August 18.

Familiar opponents fill Magoffin County's 2017 schedule.

Magoffin County has additional home games scheduled versus Harlan, Knott County Central, Estill County and Breathitt County.

The Hornets are slated to visit Lawrence County, East Ridge, Betsy Layne, Powell County and Morgan County for other games.

Magoffin County is due to host Class 3A, District 7 rival Breathitt County for a regular-season finale on October 20.
