GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Lady Hornets drop district game to Sheldon Clark

INEZ - Magoffin County dropped its 2014 57th District finale to Sheldon Clark on Thursday, Dec. 18. Host Sheldon Clark pulled away to defeat the Lady Hornets 52-30 in the early-season 57th District girls’ basketball matchup. 

Sophomore guard Hope Lafferty paced Sheldon Clark with a game-high 20 points. Senior guard/forward Kelsey Dean scored 14 points and junior forward Emily Waller added 11 for the Lady Cardinals in the district win. 

Registering a double-double, Waller pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for Sheldon Clark in the victory. 

Dean just missed a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. 

Aiding the Sheldon Clark offensive attack, Ashley Hatfield and Kelsey Garcia added five and two points, respectively. 

Magoffin County shot 35 percent (14-of-40) from the field. The Lady Hornets, struggling from beyond the arc, finished 0-for-6 from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County also finished 2-for-10 from the free throw line. 

Leslee Howard led Magoffin County with 12 points and eight rebounds. Howard was the only Magoffin County scorer to reach double figures as Allie Ohair scored eight points, Jazzy Howard, the Lady Hornets’ leading scorer for the season, chipped in six and Alexis Montgomery netted four. 

Jazzy Howard ranked as Magoffin County’s leading rebounder, securing a team-best 10 rebounds. 

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Sheldon Clark for another 57th District game on Jan. 16.
