SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County edged 57th District opponent Sheldon Clark 54-52 in overtime on Friday night.
With the win, the Lady Hornets halted a two-game losing skid, improving to 8-9 overall and evening their 57th District record to 2-2.
The Lady Cardinals suffered their second straight loss, slipping to 9-6 overall and 1-3 in the district as a result of the short effort.
Magoffin County shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47) from the field. The Lady Hornets were 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range.
Magoffin County shot 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the free throw line.
Junior guard Jazzy Howard led Magoffin County with a game-high 21 points. Junior forward Leslee Howard netted 17 points and freshman guard Alexis Montgomery added 12 as three Magoffin County scorers reached double figures.
Additional scorers for Magoffin County in the key district victory were Allie Ohair (five points), Kaelyn Greene (four points) and Shanna Howard (one point).
Leading Magoffin County inside, Ohair collected a team-high seven rebounds.
Sheldon Clark shot 41 percent (16-of-39) from the field. The Lady Cardinals were 0-for-9 from 3-point range.
Sheldon Clark shot 60.6 percent (20--of-33) from the free throw line.
Kelsey Garcia paced Sheldon Clark with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Delivering a double-double of her own, Emily Waller scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for the Lady Cardinals.
Joining Garcia and Waller in double figures in the scoring column, Hope Lafferty pitched in 11 points for the Lady Cardinals in the district loss.
Despite falling short, Sheldon Clark owned a 37-21 advantage over Magoffin County in the rebounding column.
Magoffin County and Sheldon Clark split their annual two-game regular-season district series. When the two teams met in Inez on Dec. 18, Sheldon Clark prevailed 52-30. But the Lady Hornets wouldn’t be denied in the latest meeting.
