PAINTSVILLE - Following a delay due to the recent winter weather, Magoffin County came short in a postseason matchup, falling to host Johnson Central in the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Tuesday night. Johnson Central, last season’s 15th Region runner-up, held on to edge the Lady Hornets 48-46.

With the win, Johnson Central improved to 17-11 and advanced to the district title game.

Following the loss, Magoffin County exited the 2014-15 season 10-13.

Johnson Central shot only 32.5 percent (13-of-40) from the field. The Lady Eagles fared slightly better beyond the arc, shooting 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from 3-point range.

Johnson Central shot 68 percent (17-of-25) from the free throw line.

Junior guard Lauren Delong led a balanced Johnson Central offensive effort with 11 points. Accompanying  Delong in double figures, sophomore forward Lauryn Salyer scored 10 points for the Lady Eagles.

Narrowly missing double figures for Johnson Central, sophomore guard Micailyn Pierce pushed in nine points in the thrilling win.

Bailey Daniel netted eight points and Jayla Spurlock pushed in seven for the Lady Eagles.

Spurlock led Johnson Central on the backboards. The productive Spurlock pulled down seven rebounds for the Johnson Central girls’ team.

Salyer and Daniel followed in the rebounding column, delivering six rebounds apiece.

Jazzy Howard paced Magoffin County with a game-high 28 points. Howard was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column.

Prior to meeting in the postseason, 57th District foes Magoffin County and Johnson Central split their two-game series during the regular-season.

Several members of the Magoffin County girls’ basketball team will now make the transition over to the diamond, suiting up for the Lady Hornet softball squad.

In the opening game of the highly competitive 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Sheldon Clark held on to defeat Paintsville 48-45.

Johnson Central is scheduled to meet Sheldon Clark in the 57th District championship game at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday night.
