GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Magoffin Co. ladies fall to Powell Co. girls

STANTON - Junior center Destiny Pack poured in a game-high 29 points to lead host Powell County past Magoffin County 60-55 in a girls’ high school basketball game on Saturday. 

With the win, Powell County improved to 10-6. Powell County posted its third straight win. 

Following the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 6-7. Magoffin County dropped into the loss column after notching back-to-back wins over 15th Region foes East Ridge and Johnson Central. 

Joining Peck in double figures, junior guard Amber Branham added 10 points for the Lady Pirates. 

Powell County shot 45.2 percent (19-of-42) from the field. The Lady Pirates won despite finishing only 1-of-9 from 3-point range. 

Powell County shot 55.3 percent (21-of-38) from t he free throw line. 

The Lady Pirates also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Lady Hornets 33-24.

Dakota Brown scored six points, Shayla Lindon five, Savanna Hamilton four, Sarah Spencer three and Krista Estep two for Powell County in the victory. 

Brown ranked as Powell County’s leading rebounder, grabbing seven rebounds in the winning effort. 

Powell County, a squad from the neighboring 14th Region, overcame a dozen turnovers en route to the win. 

Magoffin County shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the field, including 1-of-4 from 3-point range. 

The Lady Hornets, however, didn’t fare as well at the free throw line. Magoffin County finished 8-of-25 (32 percent) from the charity stripe. 

Four Lady Hornets reached double figures in the scoring column. Jazzy Howard, a junior guard, paced Magoffin County with a team-high 17 points. Freshman guard Alexis Montgomery scored 14 points, freshman center Allie Ohair netted 13 and junior forward Leslee Howard chipped in 11 for the Lady Hornets.

Rounding out the Magoffin County scoring, eighth-grade guard Kennedi Stacy flipped in five points. 

Ohair led Magoffin County inside, securing seven rebounds. 

The Lady Hornets committed 17 turnovers in the loss. 

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Powell County in a late-season game on Feb. 12. 

The Lady Hornets entered the week with additional regular-season games remaining versus Knott County Central, Sheldon Clark, Estill County, Allen Central, Shelby Valley, Betsy Layne, Paintsville, East Ridge, Pikeville, Johnson Central, Morgan County and Breathitt County.

Magoffin County was visiting Knott County Central on Wednesday night. Results from the Magoffin County-Knotty County Central girls’ basketball game were unavailable at press time.
