HAZARD - Magoffin County fell victim to a 15-1 Harlan County second-quarter run in the opening game of the 1st Trust Bank Holiday Classic at Hazard on Friday. Harlan County, a contender for the 13th Region championship, pulled away to defeat the Lady Hornets 63-35.
Senior guard Bella Noe led Harlan County with a game-high 24 points. Joining Noe in double figures, junior guard/forward Lindsay Branson netted 14 points for the Lady Bears.
Harlan County shot 58.7 percent (27-of-46) from the field. The Lady Bears were 0-of-4 from 3-point range.
Harlan County finished 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from the free throw line.
Narrowly missing double figures, freshman forward Kaylea Gross netted nine points for the Lady Bears.
After carrying a 15-12 lead out of the opening quarter, Harlan County outscored the Lady Hornets 15-1 in the second quarter to move ahead 30-13.
Harlan County remained ahead after intermission, outscoring the Lady Hornets 20-14 in the third quarter to stretch its lead.
Freshman guard Alexis Montgomery led Magoffin County with 13 points. Montgomery was the only Magoffin County scorer to reach double figures in the loss.
Kennedy Stacy scored eight points, Allie Ohair and Jazzy Howard chipped in five apiece and Jalyssa Gibson and Shanna Howard added two each for the Lady Hornets.
The Magoffin County and Harlan County girls’ basketball teams are not scheduled to meet again this season.
