GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Lady Hornets capture 57th District championship

PAINTSVILLE - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets returned t o the top of the 57th District last week. Magoffin County, under the guidance of head coach Scott Castle, defeated Johnson Central 53-42 in the championship game of the 57th District Girls' Basketball Tournament on Thursday night.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 18-9.

Johnson Central slipped to 18-11 with the loss.

Magoffin County head coach Scott Castle complimented his team after the district title win. "I'm proud of how they played," Castle said. 

The Magoffin County coach also applauded the Lady Hornet fanbase.

"The pep section was full and it has had a great affect on our team throughout the season," Castle said.

Magoffin County shot 35.6 percent (16-of-45) from the field in the district championship triumph. The Lady Hornets were 4-of-11 (36.4 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot (60.7 percent) from the free throw line in the victory. 

Leslee Howard led Magoffin County with a game-high 17 points. Joining Howard in double figures for the Lady Hornets, Jazzy Howard scored 14 points and Alexis Montgomery netted 12 points. 

Jazzy Howard registered a double-double, pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds for the Lady Hornets, who took a lead out of each quarter.

Magoffin County outscored Johnson Central 12-7 in the first quarter and later led 19-16 at halftime.

Extending its lead to double digits shortly after intermission, Magoffin County outscored Johnson Central 14-5 in the third quarter. 

Completing the Magoffin County individual scoring, Allie Ohair and Kennedi Stacy pushed in five points apiece. 

Struggling offensively, Johnson Central shot only 22.6 percent (12-of-53) from the field. The Lady Eagles were 1-of-14 from 3-point range in the setback. 

Johnson Central shot 63 percent (17-of-27) from the free throw line. 

Bailey Daniel led Johnson Central with 15 points. Joining Daniel in double figures for the Lady Eagles, Jayla Spurlock added 11 points. 

Both Magoffin County and Johnson Central advanced to the 15th Region Girls' Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. 

In addition to Magoffin County and Johnson Central, Pikeville, Prestonsburg, Lawrence County, Belfry, Betsy Layne and Shelby Valley advanced to the region tournament.
