GATLINBURG, Tenn. - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets compiled a 1-2 record in the annual Smoky Mountain Classic held Thursday, Dec. 21-Saturday, Dec. 23.
Magoffin County, under the direction of head coach Doug Greene, notched a win over a team out of Texas during the Gatlinburg-Pittman High School-hosted basketball tournament.
Former 15th Region champion Magoffin County faced opponents from two other states as well as a familiar in-state nemesis during the Smoky Mountain Classic.
The Lady Hornets had the tough task of facing perennial 14th Region title contender Perry County Central in the opening round of the Smoky mountain Classic on Thursday, Dec. 21. Perry County Central, which is expected to push for district and region championships later in the 2017-18 season, prevented Magoffin County from returning to the win column, defeating the Lady Hornets 65-47.
Magoffin County, however, managed to knock off New Way Christian Academy, a team out of Odessa, Texas, 65-41 in the second round of the Smoky Mountain Classic on Friday, Dec. 22.
The victory over New Way Christian Academy allowed Magoffin County to halt a four-game losing skid. Magoffin County hadn't won since outlasting Prestonsburg 49-45 on December 9.
Austin-East, a squad out of Knoxville, Tenn., pulled away to win a tight game over Magoffin Couty in the final round of the Smoky Mountain Classic on Saturday, Dec. 23, prevailing 55-45.
Teams from numerous states, including several squads from Kentucky, competed in the 2017 edition of the tradition-rich Smoky Mountain Classic.
