LEXINGTON - Magoffin County High School senior Trenton Russell competed in the 2017 Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches East-West All-Star Game at Transylvania University's Beck Gymnasium on Saturday.

Russell was among the finalists for the 2017 Mr. Basketball award. During his senior season, Russell averaged 23.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for Magoffin County, leading the Hornets in scoring. Russell shot 39.4 percent (71-of-180) from 3-point range and ranked as one of the state's best long distance shooters.

Heading into the 2016-17 season, Russell was voted the 15th Region's preseason player of the year.

As a junior, Russell averaged 23.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the Hornets.

Russell took his place as a leader for the Magoffin County boys' basketball program early in his prep career.

The Hornets entered the 2016-17 season as the 15th Region favorite. Magoffin County concluded the 2016-17 season 18-12 following a loss to 58th District champion South Floyd in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville earlier in the month. The Hornets finished runner-up to longtime rival Johnson Central in the 57th District.

Russell is set to try out for the Kentucky All-Stars at Campbellsville University on Sunday.
