HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Ables set to take field for Union College

BARBOURVILLE - Former Magoffin County High School standout Devan Ables is headed into his freshman season with the Union College football team.

One of the state’s top high school receivers in 2014, his senior campaign, Ables signed with the Union College football program during National Signing Day on Feb. 4. During his senior season in 2014, Ables hauled in 60 receptions for 1,215 yards and 18 touchdowns. Ables was among 40 players to sign with Union College, which is now under the direction of head coach Zak Willis. Union College has announced the game times for each of its 10 games for the 2015 season. 

Headlining the game times will be three night games at Williamson Stadium at Burch/Nau Field throughout the course of the campaign. 

The Bulldogs will kick off their 2015 season at home on September 5 as they take on Webber (Fla.) in an out-of-conference showdown at Williamson Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m. The matchup will be the first meeting between the schools. Union will play at home in a season-opener for the first time since 2010. 

Following a bye week, Union will host Campbellsville in the first night game of the year at Williamson Stadium on September 19 beginning at 7 p.m. The following week, Union will hit the road for the first time and travel down Interstate 75 to rival Cumberlands for its first Mid-South Eastern Division game of the season. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Williamsburg.

The Bulldogs will continue MSC play on October 3 when they take on Lindsey Wilson at home. Kickoff for the Union-Lindsey Wilson football game is set for 7 p.m.

Following back-to-back road games at Bethel (Tenn.) on October 10 (2:30 p.m.) and Georgetown in conference play on October 17 (1:30 p.m.), Union will entertain Kentucky Christian in another MSC East battle on October 24. Union and Kentucky Christian will hook up in a Homecoming game. The Homecoming tilt is set to kick off at 6 p.m.

After another MSC game for the Bulldogs is slated for Pikeville on October 31 at 1:30 p.m. The Bulldogs will host Bluefield in their final MSC East game of the year on November 7. The Senior Day clash between the schools will is slated to start at 1:30 p.m.

Union College will visit Faulkner (Ala.) for its regular-season finale on November 14. Kickoff for the Union-Faulkner football game is set for 2:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs will look to rebound from a 1-9 (1-5 MSC East) campaign last season.
