SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County football team is headed into its season opener. The Hornets are slated to kick off the 2018 high school football season on the road at East Carter on Friday.
Magoffin County is under the direction of head coach Justin Combs and his staff. Combs expects East Carter to present his team with a tough challenge. East Carter pulled away to defeat the Hornets 36-6 in the two teams' 2017 season opener.
"East Carter runs the football hard and has some great size," said Combs. "It’ll be a big test for us but I think our guys are up for the challenge."
Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 7, along with Powell County, Morgan County, Knott County Central, Estill County and Breathitt. The Hornets concluded the 2017 season 2-8. A former Class 3A, District 7 Champion, Magoffin County notched wins over East Ridge and Betsy Layne during the 2017 season while dropping games to East Carter, Lawrence County, Harlan, Powell County, Morgan County, Knott County Central, Estill County and Breathitt County.
East Carter concluded the 2017 season 4-6, missing out on advancing to the Class 4A State Playoffs. The Comets compete in Class 4A, District 8, along with top-ranked Johnson Central, Ashland, Greenup County, Rowan County and Boyd County. Johnson Central has advanced to three consecutive Class 4A state title games.
Following the season-opening matchup versus East Carter, Magoffin County has away games scheduled at Harlan (Sept. 14), Morgan County (Sept. 28), Knott County Central (Oct. 5) and Breathitt County (Oct. 19). The Hornets are due to host Lawrence County (Aug. 24), East Ridge (Aug. 31), Betsy Layne (Sept. 7), Powell County (Sept. 21) and Estill County (Oct. 12) for home games.
