SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County returned to the win column with a victory in a district opener late last week. The Hornets, under the direction of second-year head coach Scotty McCoy, blanked visiting Class 3A, District 7 rival Knott County Central 53-0 on Friday night.
With the win, Magoffin County improved to 3-2 overall and opened Class 3A, District 7 competition 1-0.
The Hornets returned to the field after an open date.
As a result of the loss, Knott County Central dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the district.
Knott County Central took the field for the fifth time in as many weeks. The Patriots were held scoreless for the second straight week.
Sophomore running back Dalton Peters paced Magoffin County offensively. One of the area’s top young high school running backs, Peters rushed seven times for 125 yards and three touchdowns.
Quarterback Dalton Keeton rushed four times for 85 yards for the Hornets. Keeton completed both of his pass attempts for 41 yards and one touchdown in the district game.
Helping to lead Magoffin County on the offensive side, Gareth Gray rushed six times for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Chance Allen aided the Magoffin County offensive attack, rushing three times for 39 yards and one touchdown.
Emerging as a capable running back, Brandon Hackworth took a dozen carries out of the Magoffin County backfield for 73 yards in the convincing victory.
Devan Ables was on the receiving end of both of Keeton’s pass completions, finishing with 41 yards and one touchdown.
Both Chance Allen and Dillon Williams recovered a fumble for the Hornets.
Ables led the Magoffin County defense with seven tackles. Cody Mullins followed, delivering five tackles for the Hornets. Two Magoffin County defensive players - Colton Williams and Ethan Minix - chipped in four tackles apiece.
Magoffin County’s remaining regular-season schedule includes the following opponents: Breathitt County, Jackson County, Betsy Layne, Morgan County and Lewis County.
The Hornets will visit Breathitt County for another district game on Thursday.
