LOUISA - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets snapped a two-game losing streak earlier in the week, defeating 57th District rival Lawrence County 17-7 in five innings on the road Monday night. Magoffin County, under the guidance of second-year head coach Chester McCoy, returned to the win column after dropping back-to-back games to Ashland and George Rogers Clark on Saturday.
With the win, defending 15th Region champion Magoffin County improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the 57th District.
Following the loss, its third straight setback, Lawrence County fell to 4-8 overall and 0-1 in the district.
Magoffin County shook a slow start and pulled away to win the district game easily. Hot-hitting Lawrence County plated four runs during its first at-bat and led 6-1 at the conclusion of the second inning.
But the Lady Hornets got going offensively. Magoffin County scored six runs in the top half of the fourth inning. Still, Lawrence County hung around in the district matchup. After Lawrence County answered with a run of its own, Magoffin County scored 10 times in the top half of the fifth inning to move ahead 17-7.
The Lady Hornets manufactured 17 runs on 11 hits. Excelling in the field, Magoffin County enjoyed an error-free performance.
Lawrence County scored its seven runs on only four hits. The Lady Bulldogs committed two errors.
Alyssa Kennard was 1-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs for the victorious Lady Hornets.
Laylee Burchell went 2-for-3 in Magoffin County's win.
Mahallie Ratliff recorded three RBIs while Madison Reed and Leslee Howard drove in two runs apiece for the Lady Hornets.
Jazzy Howard, Hannah Skaggs and Kia Bolen added one RBI each for Magoffin County n the district triumph.
Ratliff earned the win. The Magoffin County pitcher tossed a complete game.
Magoffin County has additional regular-season district games remaining versus Johnson Central, Paintsville and Sheldon Clark.
