SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets have been on a lengthy break. Magoffin County hasn't played since blanking host Breathitt County 10-0 in six innings in a mid-season high school softball game on April 27. The Lady Hornets are scheduled to host 15th Region foe Belfry on Thursday. First pitch for the Magoffin County-Belfry softball game is set for 6 p.m.
Magoffin County and Belfry are longtime non-district rivals. Belfry competes in the 15th Region's 60th District.
Magoffin County will carry an 8-9 record into the home game versus Belfry. Through May 9, Belfry was 17-10.
Through 17 games, Magoffin County has managed to edge opponents 144-143 in the scoring column.
Head coach Tony Skaggs guides the Lady Hornets. Magoffin County has notched wins over Breathitt County, South Floyd, Betsy Layne, Sheldon Clark, East Ridge and Belfry.
Magoffin County and Belfry are prepared to meet for the third time in the 2017 season. The Lady Hornets outlasted Belfry 9-7 on April 15 in a game played in the Pikeville-hosted Lyndel Potter Memorial Tournament.
Belfry defeated Magoffin County 14-10 in an early-season meeting on March 29.
Magoffin County will conclude the regular-season with four consecutive home games. The Lady Hornets are also slated to host Perry County Central, Pike County Central and Knott County in late-regular-season games next week.
Magoffin County is paired up with Sheldon Clark in the opening round of the 57th District Softball Tournament. The Magoffin County-Sheldon Clark postseason matchup is scheduled for May 22 in nearby Paintsville. Johnson Central is poised to host the 57th District Softball Tournament.
