SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County softball team suffered its first 57th District loss in the 2014 season on Monday, falling to Johnson Central. In a matchup between the last two 15th Region champions, Johnson Central scored first and never trailed on its way to defeating the host Lady Hornets 12-4.
With the win, Johnson Central improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the 57th District.
As a result of the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 8-7 overall and 2-1 in the district.
Magoffin County lost despite outhitting Johnson Central 9-5.
Defensive woes plagued Magoffin County in more than one inning. The Lady Hornets were charged with nine errors in the setback.
Two talented freshmen worked out of the circle during the 57th District softball game.
Johnson Central freshman pitcher Micailyn Pierce worked herself out of multiple jams and earned the win.
Magoffin County freshman pitcher Mahallie Ratliff allowed six earned runs and suffered the loss.
Johnson Central outscored Magoffin County 2-1 in the opening inning and clung to a 4-3 lead at the end of the fourth frame.
Finishing strong, Johnson Central took advantage of some of Magoffin County's defensive mistakes to plate eight runs over the final three innings.
Magoffin County could only manufacture one run during its final plate appearance in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Offensively for Magoffin County, Hannah Skaggs went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Jazzy Howard went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lady Hornets.
Ratliff, Laylee Burchell, Darci Arnett, Leslee Howard and Kia Bolen each had one hit for the Magoffin County softball team. Leslee Howard delivered a double of her own for the Lady Hornets.
Magoffin County dropped back-to-back games on Saturday, falling to host Henry Clay and Madison Central in Lexington. Henry Clay defeated the Lady Hornets 1-3. In a slugfest, Madison Central doubled up the Lady Hornets 20-10 in six innings.
