HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Magoffin Co. wins two in Johnson Central tournament

PAINTSVILLE - The Magoffin County softball team posted a pair of wins in the Mayfield Ice Creamier-Battle by the Creek at Johnson Central late last week. Magoffin County defeated Paintsville and East Ridge in the latest edition of Johnson Central's annual softball tournament. 

More on each tournament game involving the Magoffin County softball team follows. 

Magoffin County 16, Paintsville 1: The Magoffin County Lady Hornets rolled past 57th District rival Paintsville, defeating the Lady Tigers 16-1 in a non-district game in Johnson Central's annual tournament on Thursday. 

Magoffin County scored 16 runs on nine hits. The Lady Hornets also benefited from three Paintsville errors.

Magoffin County pitcher Laylee Burchell tossed a three-hitter. Burchell recorded four strikeouts in a stellar outing. 

Offensively, recent Cumberlands signee Darci Arnett led Magoffin County. Arnett went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs. 

Alyssa Kennard was 2-for-3 with a game-high 4 RBIs for the Lady Hornets.

Burchell, helping her cause, added two hits and a pair of RBIs.

Leslee Howard and Erin Bolen added one hit apiece and Jazzy Howard and Hannah Skaggs contributed one RBI each. 

As a team, Magoffin County batted .562 versus Paintsville.

Magoffin County 7, East Ridge 0: Magoffin County recorded its first shutout win in the 2014 season late last week, banking East Ridge 7-0 in Johnson Central's tournament on Friday. 

Lady Hornet pitcher Hannah Skaggs earned the shutout win. Skaggs limited East Ridge to four hits and recorded 10 strikeouts in six innings. 

Magoffin County scored two runs in the first inning, two in the third and three more in the sixth.

The Lady Hornets plated seven runs on 10 hits. 

Skaggs and Leslee Howard led the Magoffin County offense with two hits apiece. Howard had two RBIs and Skaggs drove in one run for the Lady Hornets. The productive Howard also belted a home run.

Jazzy Howard, Alyssa Kennard, Madison Reed, Laylee Burchell, Erin Bolen and Kia Bolen each had one hit for Magoffin County in the win.

Jazzy Howard, Reed and Kia Bolen collected one RBI apiece. 

East Ridge committed two errors in the loss. 

Following the win over East Ridge, Magoffin County improved to 5-2.
