Hornets conclude regular-season 17-10

SALYERSVILLE - Preseason 15th Region favorite Magoffin County ended the 2016-17 regular-season 17-10. The Hornets, under the direction of veteran head coach Robbie Russell, outlasted visiting Pikeville 63-62 in a regular-season finale on Tuesday, Feb. 14. 

Magoffin County finished the regular-season strong, registering back-to-back wins. The Hornets topped Prestonsburg 61-41 in a late-season game on February 10. 

As a team, Magoffin County shot 46.6 percent from the field during the regular-season. The Hornets shot 34.2 percent  from 3-point range. 

Magoffin County shot 73.2 percent from the free throw line. 

Co-15th Region Player of the Year Trenton Russell led the Hornets in scoring during the regular-season, averaging 24.1 points per game. Russell ranked as the Hornets' second-leading rebounder, grabbing 7.1 rebounds per game. 

Jaren Lovely, who has signed to play baseball for Marshall University, averaged 19.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game for the Hornets during the regular-season. Russell and Lovely combined to score 1,176 points for Magoffin County during the regular-season. 

Ryan Mullins averaged 8.9 points per game for Magoffin County and ranked as the Hornets' leading rebounder during the regular-season, hauling down 7.1 rebounds per game.

Multiple players delivered for Magoffin County throughout the 2016-17 regular-season. 

Dylan Arnett (4.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg) and Dalton Peters (4.6 ppg, 6.4 rpg) have also been key contributors for the Hornets. 

Magoffin County, Sheldon Clark and Johnson Central finished in a three-way tie for first-place in the 57th District. Johnson Central wound up with the top seed, while Sheldon Clark was seeded second and Magoffin County third.
