GRAYSON - Visiting Magoffin County faltered after a strong start as East Carter pulled away to win 47-12 in a high school football season opener on Friday night.
Familiar foes, Magoffin County and East Carter are non-district rivals.
Surging late, East Carter scored 28 points in the final quarter.
Magoffin County scored first and led 6-0 at the conclusion of the opening quarter.
But East Carter answered.
The Raiders battled back to lead 19-12 at halftime.
Following a scoreless third quarter, East Carter erupted for 28 points in the final period..
East Carter excelled on the ground, rushing 29 times for 219 yards.
Eric Carter led East Carter on the ground, rushing 11 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns. Carter scored on runs of 64 yards and 23 yards, respectively.
Through the air, East Carter quarterback Braden Hicks completed three of 12 passes for 61 yards.
Magoffin County amassed 265 yards of total offense in the loss. The Hornets rushed for 149 yards.
Brady Whitaker, one of the top boys' basketball players in the 15th Region, led Magoffin County on the ground, rushing nine times for 77 yards and one touchdown.
Mason Lovely finished second behind Whitaker in the rushing column, taking six carries for 34 yards.
Magoffin County quarterback Lucas Litteral completed eight of 18 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown with three interceptions.
Whitaker and Matthew Watkins hauled in four receptions apiece for the Hornets.
Lovely led the Magoffin County defensive effort with 11 tackles and one sack.
Watkins and Brad Sandifer recorded one interception apiece for the Hornets in the setback.
Magoffin County (0-1) slated to host Lawrence County (0-1) for a home opener on Friday, Aug. 24. The Hornets and Bulldogs are set to meet in another non-district matchup.
