Hornets lose shootout to Morgan County

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County came up short in a shootout during its latest outing on the gridiron. Visiting Morgan County pulled away to defeat the Hornets 64-46 in a Class 3A, District 7 football game on Friday night.  

With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in Class 3A, District 7.

Morgan County improved to 3-3 and 2-0 in the district with the win. 

Quarterback Garrett Adkins led Morgan County to the district win, completing 19-of-24 passes for 323 yards and four touchdowns. Adkins went interception-free in the district matchup versus the Hornets. 

Michael Prater led Morgan County in receiving, reeling in nine receptions for 224 yards and two touchdowns. 

Ranking second in receiving for the Cougars, Zach Gilliam reeled in seven receptions for 74 yards and two touchdowns. 

Prater also led Morgan County on the ground, rushing eight times for 101 yards and one touchdown in the Cougars' hard-fought victory.

Kaden Ballenger ranked as Morgan County's second-leading rusher, taking 11 carries for 94 yards and one touchdown. 

Kevin Howard rushed three times for 93 yards and two touchdowns as Morgan County prevailed. 

Defensively for Morgan County, Gilliam posted a game-high 15 tackles. Prater, who also pulled double-duty for the Cougars, delivered 12 tackles in the visiting team's winning effort. 

Payton Hampton, another Morgan County defensive player, recorded an interception. 

Magoffin County rushed for 262 yards in the loss. The Hornets, showing some versatility on the offensive side, passed for 114 yards in the short effort. 

Brady Whitaker led Magoffin County offensively, rushing 16 times for 203 yards and four touchdowns. 

Along with Whitaker, Nolan Arnett, Nick Caldwell and Logan Lovely rushed for positive yardage for the Hornets. 

Whitaker and Caldwell split time at quarterback for the Hornets. Both Whitaker and Caldwell passed for a touchdown.

Whitaker was the more accurate of the two Magoffin County quarterbacks, completing 8-of-10 passes for 60 yards and one touchdown.

Caldwell was 5-of-10 for 54 yards and one touchdown while throwing one interception.

Arnett and Lovely hauled in one touchdown pass reception apiece for Magoffin County in the setback. Combined, Arnett and Lovely reeled in 10 receptions for 93 yards and two TDs.

Leading the Hornets on special teams, Arnett returned four kickoffs for 225 yards and one touchdown.

Defensively for Magoffin County, Arnett and Trenton Caldwell recorded seven tackles apiece, sharing team-high honors in the defensive category. 

The Hornets entered the month of October with regular-season games remaining versus Knott County Central, Estill County and Breathitt County.
