Hornets to meet Boyd County in 15th Region Challenge

SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Hornets are slated to battle the Boyd County Lions in Game 5 of the 15th Region Preseason Challenge at Johnson Central High School on Saturday, Nov 18.

Magoffin County is preparing to make its debut under new head coach Scott Castle. The former coach of the Magoffin County Lady Hornets, Castle replaced Robbie Russell as the Hornets' head coach.

Magoffin County concluded the 2016-17 season 18-12 after falling in overtime to South Floyd in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville. The Hornets, playing on their home floor, finished runner-up to Johnson Central in the 2017 57th District Boys' Basketball Tournament.

Boyd County is under the direction of former Lawrence County head coach Randy Anderson. The Lions ended the 2016-17 season 26-7 following a loss to Elliott County in the semifinals of the 16th Region Boys Basketball Tournament at Morehead State University. Boyd County is the reigning 64th District champion. 

Other boys' high school basketball matchups set for the 15th Region Preseason Challenge are Betsy Layne vs. Sheldon Clark, Letcher County Central vs. Greenup County, Belfry vs. Buckhorn, Pike County Central vs. Perry County Central, Shelby Valley vs. Ashland and Johnson Central vs. Cordia.
