Hornets nearing kickoff for 2017 season

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County is just over one week away from kicking off its 2017 football season. The Hornets will face a 10-game regular-season schedule under the direction of head coach Justin Combs. 

A look at Magoffin County's regular season opponents follows. 

Aug. 18 vs. East Carter: Magoffin County will host East Carter for its season opener on Aug. 18. The Raiders ended the 2016 season 2-8, missing out on advancing to the Class 4A State Playoffs. 

Aug. 25 at Lawrence County: The Hornets will visit Lawrence County for their first away game in the 2017 season on Aug. 25. Lawrence County concluded the 2016 season 4-7, falling in the opening round of the Class 3A State Playoffs.

Sept. 1 at East Ridge: Magoffin County will visit East Ridge on Sept. 1. The Warriors compiled a 4-6 record in 2016.

Sept. 8 at Betsy Layne: The Hornets will venture to Betsy Layne for a game against former head coach Scotty McCoy on Sept. 8. Betsy Layne is currently on a nine-game losing streak. The Bobcats ended the 2016 season 1-9 but will look to show improvement early under McCoy's guidance. 

Sept. 15 vs. Harlan: The Hornets will host Harlan on Sept. 15. Harlan finished 7-4 in 2016, losing in the opening round of the Class A State Playoffs.  

Sept. 22 at Powell County: Magoffin County will visit Powell County for its first Class 3A, District 7 game on Sept. 22. The Pirates, following a first round loss in the Class 3A State Playoffs, compiled a 4-7 record in 2016 and are already shaping up to be a much-improved team.  

Sept. 29 vs. Morgan County: The Hornets will host border rival Morgan County in a key Class 3A, District 7 game on Sept. 29. The Cougars ended the 2016 season 1-9. 

Oct. 6 vs. Knott County Central: Magoffin County will host Cameron Jones-led Knott County Central on Oct. 6. The Patriots posted a 5-6 record in 2016 and are tabbed the preseason favorite in Class 3A, District 7. 

Oct. 13 at Estill County: The Hornets will visit Estill County for another Class 3A, District 7 game on Oct,. 13. Estill County reached teh second round of the Class 3A State Playoffs in 2016, ultimately posting a 9-3 record. 

Oct. 20 vs. Breathitt County: In another pivotal Class 3A, District 7 matchup, Magoffin County will entertain familiar foe Breathitt County on Oct. 20. The Bobcats finished 4-7 in 2016.
