Hornets outlast Pikeville, 63-62

SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County edged visiting Pikeville 63-62 in a late-season boys' high school basketball game on Tuesday night. 
With the win, Magoffin County improved to 17-10.
Pikeville slipped to 17-8 with the loss. 
Jaren Lovely led Magoffin County with 25 points and four assists. 
Contributing to a balanced Magoffin County attack, Trenton Russell scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Hornets in the hard-fought win.
Joining Lovely and Russell in double figures for the Hornets, Ryan Mullins posted 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds. 
Additional contributors to Magoffin County's win included Dalton Peters (four points, seven rebounds) and Daniel Minix (two points).
Lovely connected on a 3-pointer to tie the game with one minute remaining. Ultimately pushing the Hornets over the top, Russell drained a free throw with 23 seconds remaining. Russell's foul shot gave the host team a one-point lead.
Pikeville standout Wyatt Battaile missed a shot at the end of the game and Russell secured the rebound to clinch the Hornets' victory.
"It was a great game," said Magoffin County Coach Robbie Russell. "(Jaren) Lovely had a big second half, (Ryan) Mullins played a solid game inside and (Dalton) Peters played a great defensive game." 
Magoffin County prevented Pikeville from notching its fourth straight win.
Battaile paced Pikeville with a game-high 26 points. Kyle Watkins scored 12 points and Evan Rhodes contributed 11 points for the Hornets. 
Magoffin County has one regular-season game remaining before it enters the postseason. The Hornets are due to host the 57th District Boys' Basketball Tournament next week. 
Magoffin County is slated to visit Pike County Central for a regular-season finale on Friday night. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-Pike County Central boys' basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m.
