IRVINE - The Magoffin County Hornets had the tough task of facing one of the state’s top Class 3A teams late last week. Playing at home on Friday night, Estill County secured an early lead and managed to defeat the Hornets convincingly, prevailing 48-6.
Estill County posted its second straight win, improving to 3-1 overall.
Magoffin County dipped back into the loss column, dropping to 2-2 as a result of the loss.
The Hornets, who own wins over Floyd County opponents South Floyd and Allen Central, fell to Powell County, a district rival of Estill County, earlier in the season.
The Engineers scored first and never trailed. Estill County outscored the Hornets 20-6 in the opening quarter and carried a commanding 34-6 lead into halftime.
Homestanding Estill County, remaining in control after the break, added two more touchdowns after intermission to set the final score.
Dalton Keeton scored Magoffin County’s only touchdown on a 31-yard run in the opening quarter.
Magoffin County has regular-season games remaining versus Knott County Central, Breathitt County, Jackson County, Betsy Layne, Morgan County and Lewis County.
The Hornets have this week open.
Magoffin County will host Knott County Central for a key Class 3A, District 7 game on Friday, Sept. 26.
