LICK CREEK - Magoffin County broke into the win column on the road on Thursday night (Aug. 31), defeating host East Ridge 36-24 in a non-district high school football game.
With the win, Magoffin County improved to 2-1.
East Ridge dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
The Hornets battled back to win after facing multiple deficits. East Ridge led 18-14 at halftime.
"It was a special night," Magoffin County Coach Justin Combs commented, following his team's win. "The boys on both teams showed so much class. They played their hearts out on both sides."
Magoffin County amassed 343 yards of total offense in the winning effort.
Leading Magoffin County to the win, quarterback Ryan Mullins completed 14-of-20 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns. with two interceptions.
The Magoffin County quarterback completed multiple passes to three different receivers.
Brady Whitaker (six receptions for 86 yards) and Nolan Arnett (three receptions for 50 yards) hauled in two touchdown catches apiece for the Hornets.
Another receiver, Matthew Watkins, led Magoffin County in receiving, hauling in five catches for 95 yards.
In addition to leading Magoffin County through the air, Mullins paced the Hornets on the ground, rushing 16 times for 100 yards.
Whitaker added a 10-yard rushing touchdown for the Hornets in the emotional victory.
Defensively, Trenton Caldwell led Magoffin County with a game-high 18 tackles. Caldwell recorded five solo tackles for the Hornets in the winning effort.
Ryan Mullins posted 15 tackles, Buddy Collins delivered 12 tackles and Grayson Lanning added 10 tackles for the Hornets in the non-district win.
East Ridge quarterback Kane Taylor, a junior, was injured during the game and will miss the remainder of the season. Taylor was scheduled to undergo shoulder surgery on Thursday, Sept. 7.
Magoffin County erupted for 36 points after being held to 20 points over its first two games.
