WARFIELD - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets dropped a 57th District game on the road at Sheldon Clark on Tuesday, Jan. 30. Host Sheldon Clark pulled away to defeat the Lady Hornets 50-37.
With the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 3-17 overall and 1-4 in the 57th District.
Sheldon Clark improved to 11-11 overall and 2-3 in the district with the win.
Homestanding Sheldon Clark shot 32.2 percent (19-of-59) from the field. The Lady Cardinals were 1-of-12 from 3-point range.
Sheldon Clark shot 55 percent (11-of-20) from the free throw line.
Dominating on the backboards, Sheldon Clark outrebounded Magoffin County 48-33.
Madison Thompson led a balanced Sheldon Clark attack with a double-double. Thompson scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Lady Cardinals in the victory.
Sheldon Clark featured four scorers in double figures as Paige Maynard netted 11 points and Ann Oettinger and McKenzie Preston contributed 10 points apiece.
Magoffin County shot 27.1 percent (13-of-48) from the field. The Lady Hornets were 4-of-19 from 3-point range.
Magoffin County shot 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the free throw line.
Kennedi Stacy and Alexis Montgomery combined to lead the Lady Hornets. Haley Barnett, Kenlee Wireman, Macy Thacker, Morgan Damron, Kaelyn Greene and Presley Russell also contributed for the Lady Hornets.
Magoffin County and Sheldon Clark split their two-game regular-season series. The Lady Hornets defeated Sheldon Clark 50-41 in an early-season game on December 8.
Both Magoffin County and Sheldon Clark will compete in the 57th District Girls' Basketball Tournament in less than two weeks.
