EASTERN - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets couldn't keep up with Floyd Central on the road on Tuesday night. Host Floyd Central pulled away to defeat the Lady Hornets 51-35 in a game that served as a season opener for each 15th Region girls' basketball team.
Brook Stumbo led Floyd Central to the win, scoring a game-high 21 points for the Lady Jaguars.
Narrowly missing double figures for Floyd Central, Abby Maggard added nine points.
Floyd Central carried a lead out of each quarter. The Lady Jaguars led 23-17 at halftime.
But the Lady Hornets hung around in the second half, especially early.
Magoffin County battled back to tie the game 23-23 with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter. Floyd Central, however, wouldn't be denied the win. The Lady Jaguars stretched their lead out to a double digit advantage later in the third period.
Floyd Central led 35-26 at the conclusion of the third quarter, pulling away to win convincingly in the final frame.
Magoffin County featured three scorers, all of whom reached double figures. Kennedi Stacy led the Lady Hornets in the season-opening matchup, scoring 14 points.
Haley Barnett and Alexis Montgomery rounded out the Magoffin County individual scoring, netting 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Lady Hornets trailed the home team in several key categories. Floyd Central dominated inside, outrebounding Magoffin County 45-31.
Magoffin County is slated to host 15th Region rival East Ridge on Thursday night. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-East Ridge boys' basketball game is set for 6 p.m..
