BELFRY - Magoffin County connected for nearly 20 hits but couldn't knock off Letcher County Central. Determined Letcher County Central, an opponent from the neighboring 14th Region, pulled away to defeat Magoffin County 17-11 in an early-season high school softball game on Saturday.
In an offensive-heavy matchup, Letcher County Central outhit the Lady Hornets 23-19.
Magoffin County scored first, pushing across one run in the bottom half of the first inning. The Lady Hornets swapped leads with Letcher County over the first four innings. Letcher County Central doubled up Magoffin County 8-4 in the fifth through sixth innings to separate itself from the Lady Hornets.
Several Magoffin County players contributed at the plate during the high-scoring game.
Kennedi Stacy, Brooklyn Poe, Alexis Montgomery and Morgan Wilson, all of whom are experienced players, led Magoffin County with three hits each. Poe and Montgomery drove in two runs apiece for the Lady Hornets in the short effort.
Samantha Black contributed two hits for the Lady Hornets in the setback.
Holly Handshoe and Bethany Joseph split pitching duties for the Lady Hornets. Handshoe started for Magoffin County in the early-season contest.
The Magoffin County and Letcher County Central softball teams aren't scheduled to meet again this season.
