SALYERSVILLE - Determined Magoffin County outlasted visiting Belfry 8-7 in a high school softball game on Thursday (April 12).
Non-district rivals, Magoffin County and Belfry met for the second time in less than two weeks.
Winning in thrilling fashion, Magoffin County battled back from a seven-run deficit. Through three and a half innings, Belfry owned a 7-0 lead.
But the Lady Hornets answered, scoring six runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning to pull to within one run of the Lady Pirates. Magoffin County, after holding Belfry scoreless in back-to-back at-bats, plated two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to move ahead 8-7.
The Lady Hornets outhit Belfry 14-12 and overcame six errors to claim the victory.
Magoffin County pitcher Holly Handshoe earned the win.
Brooklyn Poe led the Magoffin County offensive effort, finishing 3-for-4 and scoring two runs.
Jaime Collins, Erin Bolen and Morgan Wilson added two hits apiece for the Lady Hornets in the winning effort.
Aiding the Magoffin County offensive attack, Kennedi Stacy, Kaylee Morrison and Kallee Hale contributed one hit apiece.
Both Bolen and Hale drove in two runs apiece for the Lady Hornets.
Collins, Morrison and Emilee Bailey finished with one RBI apiece as Magoffin County prevailed.
The Lady Hornets avenged a loss to Belfry from earlier in the season. Belfry pulled away to beat Magoffin County 12-2 in five innings in an early-season game on March 31.
