INEZ - The Magoffin County Hornets slipped back into the loss column on Tuesday (Feb. 4), falling to the Sheldon Clark Cardinals on the road in a 57th District boys' basketball game. Host Sheldon Clark pulled away to defeat visiting Magoffin County 70-46.
Surging Sheldon Clark defeated Magoffin County for its fourth straight win.
Magoffin County was limited to 30.5 percent shooting (18-of-59) from the field. The Hornets, however, managed to connect on 6-of-19 3-point field goal attempts, thanks to one hot shooting hand.
Magoffin County shot 50.0 percent (4-of-8) from the foul line and, holding its own around the goal, secured 33 total rebounds in the setback.
Jaren Lovely paced Magoffin County with a team-high 18 points. Lovely was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in the scoring column. He was 6-of-12 from 3-point range in the 57th District contest.
Jeffery Bolen just missed double figures, finishing with eight points for the Hornets. Cory Pitts followed, contributing six points for Magoffin County in the loss.
Trenton Russell, Dalton Peters and Jacob Isaac added four points apiece for the Hornets, who dropped back into the loss column after defeating 15th Region counterpart East Ridge 62-53 in their previous outing on Jan. 30.
Leighton Hensley rounded out the Magoffin County scoring with two points.
Russell led Magoffin County inside, grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. Following Russell in the rebounding column, Lovely and Pitts pulled down five rebounds apiece for the Hornets.
Sheldon Clark used a balanced offensive attack to get past Magoffin County in the district contest.
Longtime 57th District rivals, the Magoffin County and Sheldon Clark boys' basketball teams met for the first time this season.
