PAINTSVILLE - Magoffin County will meet three-time defending 15th Region champion Johnson Central on its home floor in the opening round of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament on Tuesday (Feb. 24). The Hornets and Eagles are scheduled to play in the district tournament’s opening game at 6:30 p.m. in Paul R. Setser Fieldhouse.
Sheldon Clark and Paintsville are slated to play in the district tournament’s nightcap. Tip-off for the Sheldon Clark-Paintsville boys’ basketball game is set for 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday night.
Johnson Central swept a two-game regular-season series from Magoffin County. In the first meeting in Salyersville on Jan. 2, Johnson Central pulled away to win 70-58. Winning the second matchup more convincingly on Jan. 27, Johnson Central prevailed 86-46 over the Hornets.
Johnson Central and Sheldon Clark are both 4-2 in the 57th District. Each team split two-game series with former state champion Paintsville.
Magoffin County is 1-5 in the 57th District after defeating Paintsville for its lone district win. The Hornets topped Paintsville 64-55 in an early-season game on Dec. 16.
The 57th District championship game is set for 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 27.
Johnson Central is the reigning 57th District champion.
Both the champion and runner-up from the 57th District will advance to the 15th Region Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.
