PIKEVILLE - After claiming back-to-back 57th District wins over Johnson Central and Sheldon Clark, Magoffin County dropped a game to a non-district opponent. Playing at home, Pikeville pulled away to defeat the Hornets 73-56 on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
With the loss, Magoffin County slipped to 12-7.
Pikeville improved to 10-6 with the win.
The Panthers shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the field. Thriving beyond the arc, Pikeville shot 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from 3-point range.
The Panthers shot 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the free throw line.
Wyatt Battaile paced Pikeville with a game-high 26 points. Two Panthers reached double figures in the scoring column as Evan Rhodes posted 17 points.
Conner Roberts contributed nine points and Kyle Watkins chipped in eight points for Pikeville, which received scoring from eight different players.
Magoffin County featured a trio of scorers in double figures. Trenton Russell led the Hornets with 24 points and 10 rebounds, registering a double-double.
Joining Russell in double figures in the Magoffin County scoring column, Jaren Lovely scored 15 points and Ryan Mullins netted 11 points.
Dalton Peters rounded out the Magoffin County individual scoring, tossing in two points.
Magoffin County couldn't carry any momentum from its two most recent 57th District wins into the game against Pikeville.
"It was a tough loss coming off two big district wins," said Magoffin County Coach Robbie Russell. "Pikeville played really well."
Magoffin County is scheduled to host Pikeville in a late-season matchup on February 14.
