EASTERN - Magoffin County's 2017-18 season debut ended with a loss to upstart Floyd Central on the road in neighboring Floyd County. Floyd Central pulled away to defeat the Hornets 76-40 on Tuesday, Nov. 28.
Dominant Floyd Central shot 58.8 percent (30-of-51) from the field. The Jaguars were 9-of-21 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range.
Floyd Central was 7-of-9 (77.8 percent) from the free throw line.
JR Tackett paced Floyd Central with a game-high 22 points. Tackett, a senior who previously starred at South Floyd High School, knocked down nine shots from the field.
Four Floyd Central scorers reached double figures in the scoring column as Kyle Isaac posted 12 points on four 3-point field goals and Jake Collins and Brady Conn contributed 10 points apiece.
Visiting Magoffin County faced a deficit at the conclusion of each quarter.
Magoffin County shot 37.1 percent (13-of-35) from the field. The Hornets were 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.
Magoffin County shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line.
No Hornet reached double figures in the scoring column. Brady Whitaker led a limited Magoffin County offensive attack with eight points.
Dylan Arnett and Isaiah Salyer scored six points apiece while Logan Lovely tossed in five points for the Hornets.
Additional scorers for Magoffin County in the season opener included Nolan Arnett (four points), Chandler Lykins (four points), Michael Conley (three points), Mason Lovely (two points), Kaeleb Wages (one point) and Kirklen Wireman (one point).
Logan Lovely led the Hornets on the backboards, grabbing five rebounds in the setback.
Floyd Central entered its first-ever campaign ranked as one of the 15th Region's top boys' basketball teams.
The Hornets are scheduled to host Floyd Central for a late-season game on Feb. 7, 2018.
