SALYERSVILLE - The Magoffin County Lady Hornets dropped a home game to the Pikeville Lady Panthers earlier in the week. Visiting Pikeville pulled away to defeat the Lady Hornets 58-35 in a non-district girls' high school basketball game on Monday night.
Longtime rivals, Magoffin County and Pikeville met for the first time in the 2017-18 season.
Pikeville ranks as one of the 15th Region's top teams. The Lady Panthers finished runner-up to Shelby Valley in the 15th Region All "A" Classic in January and are poised to make a run in the postseason.
Magoffin County suffered its 12th straight loss while Pikeville posted a fifth consecutive win.
Pikeville moved ahead early and never faltered, distancing itself from former multi-time 15th Region champion Pikeville in the non-district clash.
Magoffin County was hosting 15th Region newcomer Jenkins on Wednesday night. Results from the Magoffin County-Jenkins girls' basketball game were unavailable at press time and will appear in next week's edition.
Magoffin County is slated to visit Prestonsburg on Thursday. Familiar foes, Magoffin County and Prestonsburg hail from neighboring districts. Prestonsburg is a member of the 58th District, along with Betsy Layne, Floyd Central and Lawrence County.
The Lady Hornets have additional regular-season games remaining versus East Ridge, Lawrence County, Betsy Layne and Floyd Central.
High school girls' baskeball teams from throughout the area and around the state are preparing to compete in the postseason later in the month.
