BELFRY - The Magoffin County Hornets finished 2-1 in the 2017 Mountain Schoolboy Classic, posting back-to-back wins over East 15th Region rivals Ridge and Phelps following a loss to 14th Region title contender Perry County Central in the tradition-rich holiday basketball tournament's opening round.

Perry County Central 72, Magoffin County 63: Magoffin County fell short in the opening round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School as Perry County Central pulled away to win 72-63 on Wednesday, Dec. 27.
Thriving offensively, Perry County Central shot 61 percent (25-of-41) from the field.
The Commodores shot 73.3 percent (22-of-30) from the free throw line.
Richard Cornett paced Perry County Central with 21 points. Perry County Central featured three scorers in double figures as Noah Back contributed 18 points and Noah Caudill chipped in 12 points.
Magoffin County shot 47.7 percent (21-of-44) from the field. The Hornets were 9-of-23 (39.1 percent) from 3-point range.
Magoffin County finished 12-of-21 from the free throw line.
Brady Whitaker led Magoffin County with a game-high 25 points. Magoffin County also featured three scorers in double figures as Michael Conley and Isaiah Salyer added 11 points apiece.
Logan Lovely flirted with a double-double for the Hornets, netting nine points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
Magoffin County 71, East Ridge 66 (OT): The Magoffin County Hornets returned to the win column in the second round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School on Thursday, Dec. 28, outlasting the East Ridge Warriors 71-66 in overtime.
Magoffin County thrived beyond the arc, connecting on 10-of-23 3-point field goal attempts.
The Hornets were 21-of-34 (61.8 percent) from the free throw line.
For the second straight game, Brady Whitaker paced Magoffin County with a game-high 25 points.
Nolan Arnett joined Whitaker in double figures, scoring 13 points for the Hornets.
Narrowly missing double figures, Logan Lovely and Isaiah Salyer scored nine points apiece in Magoffin County's victory.
Lovely continued to lead Magoffin County inside, pulling down eight rebounds.
East Ridge shot 47.7 percent (21-of-44) from the field. The Warriors were 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from 3-point range.
East Ridge shot 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the free throw line.
Kane Taylor led East Ridge with a team-high 21 points.
As part of a balanced East Ridge offensive attack, Cameron Hess scored 18 points while Dalton Wellman added 10 points.
Magoffin County 67, Phelps 65: Magoffin County edged much-improved Phelps 67-65 in the final round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic at Belfry High School on Friday, Dec, 28.
With the win, Magoffin County improved to 4-11.
Phelps slipped to 2-10 with the loss.
Magoffin County shot 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the field. The Hornets were 6-of-12 from 3-point range.
Magoffin County was 11-for-19 from the free throw line.
Isaiah Salyer paced Magoffin County with 23 points.
Brady Whitaker followed Salyer in double figures for the Hornets, netting 15 points.
Accompanying Salyer and Whitaker in double figures scoring-wise, Logan Lovely posted 11 points.
Nolan Arnett finished one field goal short of reaching double figures in Magoffin County's win, adding eight points.
