SALYERSVILLE - Magoffin County will look to carry momentum from its hard-fought win over East Ridge into Week 3 of the 2017 high school football season. The Hornets are set to visit Betsy Layne on Friday night.

Winless thus far in the 2017 season, Betsy Layne is 0-3. The Bobcats are under the direction of former Magoffin County head coach Scotty McCoy and their record is deceiving. Betsy Layne could be 2-1 with the help of less than two touchdowns.

Visiting Sheldon Clark edged Betsy Layne 26-24 in a season opener on Aug. 18. Then, following a lopsided shutout loss to new county rival Floyd Central, Betsy Layne pushed East Carter two weeks later. East Carter, a team out of Class 4A, District 8, held on to defeat the Bobcats 27-20.

Betsy Layne showed much improvement in the game versus East Carter, scoring 20 points after being held scoreless six days earlier.

Running back Logan Layne, receiver Grant Orsborn and quarterback Bradley Woods lead the Bobcats. Betsy Layne competes in Class 2A, District 8.

Magoffin County will pack a 1-2 record into Friday night's game. Prior to upending East Ridge on Thursday night, Magoffin County had dropped back to-back games to East Carter and Lawrence County. East Carter defeated the Hornets 36-6 in a season opener on Aug. 18. In an early-season game on Aug. 25. Lawrence County pulled away to defeat the Hornets 55-14.

Familiar foes, Magoffin County and Betsy Layne are non-district rivals. The Hornets prevailed when the two teams met last season, beating Betsy Layne 34-20 on Sept. 9, 2016.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Betsy Layne football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
