Magoffin County upends Pikeville

PIKEVILLE - Magoffin County prevailed in a battle of the 15th Region's winningest softball teams on Monday, defeating host Pikeville 6-1.  

Thanks to the win, Magoffin County improved to 11-7.

With the loss, Pikeville slipped to 12-10.

In the circle, Magoffin County pitcher Hannah Skaggs dominated Pikeville batters. The accomplished Skaggs pitched a complete game two-hitter. The Magoffin County pitcher didn't give up an earned run and registered 13 strikeouts.

The productive Lady Hornets scored first and never trailed. Magoffin County plated six runs on 11 hits.   

At the plate for Magoffin County, Laylee Burchell went 4-for-5 to lead a balanced batting order. 

Jazzy Howard and Darci Arnett followed, adding two hits apiece for the Lady Hornets in the victory. 

Burchell and Arnett both doubled during the non-district game.

Alyssa Kennard, Leslee Howard and Kia Bolen contributed one hit apiece as part of the Magoffin County offensive attack.

Howard and Arnett each had an RBI for Magoffin County in the triumph.

The Lady Hornets led 2-0 before Pikeville arrived on the scoreboard. Magoffin County scored its first run in the second inning and led 2-0 after crossing home plate again in the fourth frame.

Pikeville plated its lone run in the bottom half of the fifth inning.

Stretching its lead out to a more comfortable margin, Magoffin County scored four more runs in the sixth stanza. 

Magoffin County overcame four errors on its way to the win.

Pikeville committed five errors in the loss. 

Familiar opponents, Magoffin County and Pikeville are scheduled to meet again later in the current season. Magoffin County is slated to host Pikeville on May 5.
