Man found dead in the creek
JOHNSON FORK – A Magoffin County man was found unresponsive in a creek behind a residence on the Left Hand Fork of Johnson Fork in Magoffin on Saturday.
According to Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post 09, on Saturday, May 26 at approximately 8 p.m. KSP received information of a person being found unresponsive in a creek behind a home located on the Left Hand Fork of Johnson Fork in Magoffin County.
Troopers responded to the scene, along with Magoffin County Sheriff Office and Magoffin County Rescue. Upon arrival, Joseph Smithers, age 33 from the Gunlock area, was discovered deceased in the creek.
The Magoffin County coroner pronounced Mr. Smithers deceased at the scene. An autopsy is pending for the cause of death.
The case remains open and is under the investigation of Detective Newsome.
