LOUISVILLE - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association released the Top 10 All-Academic Teams in the nation, with Magoffin County High School ranking as the third-highest high school average weighted GPA.
The rankings recognize the academic prowess of softball teams, and MCHS’s 2014-2015 softball team snagged the third ranking in its division with a 4.350 collective grade point average. MCHS was the only school in the top 10 from Kentucky, and was only beat by two schools in Texas: Byron Nelson (4.827 GPA) and Bay City (4.490 GPA). There are 672 schools in the high school association nationwide.
Magoffin County High School has been a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for four years.
MCHS Head Coach and Principal Tony Skaggs said, “I’m proud of the determination these student athletes have shown. A lot of them play more than one sport - year round - and to keep that high of a GPA is awesome. I’m proud of these great kids.”
Skaggs said the students do all of the hard work on their own, showing the initiative to do class work and study on the bus during away games, as well as while waiting for the bus.
“That’s a big thing to balance time with academics and athletics,” Skaggs said. “These kids are going to have the advantage when they go to college, already being aware that academics is the most important thing and knowing how to balance studying and participating in athletics.”
