FALCON – Two were injured in a two-vehicle collision on KY Rt. 40 near the Johnson/Magoffin line Monday around noon.

Crews were dispatched to a two-vehicle wreck on Rt. 40, in the straight stretch past Handee Mart. Reportedly, Opal Blanton, of Johnson County, was driving east when another car went to pass her. The driver of the passing car misjudged the space available to pass, and with another car coming in the other lane, veered back into the right lane. In an effort to miss the car, Blanton swerved into the left lane, hitting head-on the SUV traveling west toward Magoffin, driven by Betty Horne, also of Johnson County.

The passing vehicle did not make any contact with either vehicle and didn’t stop when the accident occurred.

Blanton was flown to Pikeville Medical Center via KY 9, with serious injuries to her head and abdomen. She has already undergone one surgery and is scheduled to go in for another one after this paper goes to press. Her condition is still considered serious.

Horne was transported via Transtar Ambulance Services to Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries to her leg and back. Her condition is unknown at press time.

Magoffin County Rescue Squad, Magoffin County Sheriff Department, Transtar, KY 9, and Salyersville Fire Department responded to the collision.
