Several parents from Magoffin County Schools took parent involvement to another level by recently attending the Pike County Schools Educational Conference. Tammy Howard (parent from SME), Drema Arnett & Alicia Minix (parents from HWMS), and Jane Parmeter (parent from NME & MCHS) attended the conference along with teachers, administrators, school staff and other parents. The event was hosted by Title I, which is a federal program that provides funding to local school districts to improve the academic achievement of all students. The conference was held at East KY Expo Center, Nov. 9th & 10th. Keynote speakers included Dr. Tommy Floyd, Chief of Staff—Commissioner’s office KDE, and Byron Garrett, President and CEO of National Family Engagement Alliance. This was a great opportunity for everyone to learn more about school related topics. Standards based grading, KY Academic Standards, novice reduction, critical thinking activities, and strategies to enhance student learning were among the 35 sessions offered during the two day event.
