Russell vies for Mr. Basketball

LEXINGTON - Magoffin County senior Trenton Russell was among the finalists for the 2017 Mr. Basketball award. Russell, fellow 15th Region Co-Player of the Year Timmy Dalton and other top senior boys' basketball players from around the state were recognized as Mr. Basketball finalists during a banquet at the Lexington Center on Tuesday night.

During his senior season, Russell averaged 23.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game for Magoffin County, leading the Hornets in scoring. Russell shot 39.4 percent (71-of-180) from 3-point range and ranked as one of the state's best long distance shooters. 

Heading into the 2016-17 season, Russell was voted the 15th Region's preseason player of the year. 

As a junior, Russell averaged 23.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the Hornets. 

Russell took his place as a leader for the Magoffin County boys' basketball program early in his prep career. 

The Hornets entered the 2016-17 season as the 15th Region favorite. Magoffin County concluded the 2016-17 season 18-12 following a loss to 58th District champion South Floyd in the opening round of the 15th Region Boys' Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville earlier in the month. The Hornets finished runner-up to longtime rival Johnson Central in the 57th District. 

Paul Laurence Dunbar standout Taveion Hollingsworth was named Mr. Basketball. Bullitt East's Lindsey Duvall was named Miss Basketball during the event held Tuesday night.
