SALYERSVILLE – The Magoffin County Senior Citizens are participating in the Good Giving Challenge, through the Bluegrass Community Foundation, in efforts to raise money for the center.
The Good Giving Challenge, through the Bluegrass Community Foundation, of which the Magoffin County Community Foundation is an affiliate, is a five-week online giving celebration connecting Central and Appalachia Kentucky with causes they care about.
Through the challenge, which started on November 28 and runs through December 31, the Magoffin County Community Foundation has agreed to match donations up to $2,000 for the Magoffin County Senior Citizens. With just a couple weeks left to go in the challenge, at press time $1,105 has been donated to the seniors.
While the challenge asks for a minimum of $10 donations, Magoffin County Senior Citizens Director Marlene Howard explained even that small of an amount can go a long way in supporting local seniors.
“For $10, we can feed a senior or a week through our Meals on Wheels program, provide three shelf-stable meals for emergencies, or help pay for expenses for going to the senior games,” Howard said.
Not counting the costs of salaries, gas to deliver meals and other operational costs, the Meals on Wheels program costs the senior center roughly $700 a week in raw food. Daily, they serve 45 clients in the community and 15 to 30 more in the dining room at center.
On top of the meals program, they provide so much more for the local seniors.
“We pick them up in the morning and they go into the dining room, where we have guest speakers, exercise classes, activities, they can play cards or whatever they want to do,” Howard said. “After lunch, or even in the morning if that’s what they need, we will take them to their doctor appointments and anywhere else they need to go – the store, bank, just wherever. We help them with other needs, calling agencies for them or looking things up on the internet.”
Providing not only the services, but also a network of people going through similar phases in their lives, the center is often a lifeline for the seniors to keep their independence and stay in their homes as long as possible.
“One person having a problem will discuss it with other seniors, and they will tell them where they got help for it, and it’s this big advantage for our seniors,” Howard said.
While the services provided are invaluable to many in the community, the moral support and comradery that has grown at the senior center may be the biggest advantage provided.
“Their families may not even understand the full extent of it, but we’re our own little family,” Howard said. “When something happens to one of them, they’re all calling me and calling each other. We have our own little network, which helps them feel independent from their families. They don’t have to bother their kids to take them places or call all these agencies, and that gives them a sense of security to stay in their own home and still do what they need to do.”
While technically they won’t lose anything if they don’t hit their goal, donations will help them receive more federal dollars, since 37 percent of their federal funding is based on how much they fundraise. The more they are able to get, the more federal funding they will receive, and the more services they will be able to provide.
