SALYERSVILLE – Two pleaded guilty to criminal littering in district court recently after garbage dumped on the Dawkins Line Rail Trail led investigators to them.

In January Kentucky State Park Ranger James Burke filed for an arrest warrant on Amanda Peters, 30 years old, and Clifton Barker, 31, on charges of criminal littering, a misdemeanor.

According to the warrant, Burke stated that he investigated a complaint of littering on the Dawkins Line Rail Trail, finding six bags of litter that were picked up off the trail. Within those bags was a pill bottle with Barker’s name on it and three pill bottles with Peters’ name.

The two were arrested by Kentucky State Police Trooper Tipton on February 17, and pleaded guilty to the criminal littering charges at their arraignment hearing this week in Magoffin County District Court. They were fined $293, with another hearing scheduled for November 7, 2018 at 9 a.m.

Victoria Doucette, the Royalton Trail Town Committee president, posted online after Monday’s hearing, “Thanks to Sheriff Carson Montgomery, County Attorney Greg Allen, Judge Dennis Prater and Park Ranger Jim Burke for getting the two people in court and them getting fined $300.00 each for dumping trash on the D.L.R.T. Their names were found in the trash at the Guncreek Tunnel!”
