Two Magoffin County women were injured in a two-vehicle accident Monday morning on Route 7 a half mile north of the old Gunlock post office location.
Tina Bailey and Toni Gayheart, both of the Gunlock area, were transported by DHP Ambulance Service for treatment of injuries suffered after the vehicle they were driving collided with a coal truck.
Neither Bailey nor Gayheart suffered life threatening injuries but the Magoffin County Rescue Squad was forced to use the jaws of life to remove the driver’s side door and allow the women to exit the vehicle, according to squad captain Carter Conley.
The accident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. when the south bound Chevrolet SUV Bailey and Gayheart were traveling in collided with a north bound coal truck driven by Darrell Allen.
The SUV struck the rear driver’s side tires of the coal truck, which could have made the impact less severe, Conley said.
The SUV’s air bags did not deploy, but both passengers of the SUV were wearing seat belts, which also could have prevented more serious injuries, Conley added.
Allen was not injured.
Kentucky State Police trooper Byron Hansford responded to the accident and was in charge of the scene and the investigation.
